WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- It's easy to see all around their orthodontist office in West Palm Beach that Scott McCranels and his father are passionate about surfing.
The father and son team share their workload, and a one of a kind honor; to be inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame.
"I think it's one of the greatest honors of being inducted is that my father was already inducted in 2002. So I was the first father and son combination and I got to be part of that," Scott McCranels says.
His father, John McCranels says, "You're kinda like a renegade. You're out of the box so it's nice when you get honored, it puts you in a favorable lifestyle healthy box…and that's nice."
Scott, and his father, nicknamed "Chummer" are legends of Palm Beach County surfing. Chummer was one of the first people to ever ride waves on Singer Island, and Scott quickly followed in his father's footsteps at a very young age.
Competing professionally, touring the world, and paving the way for future south Florida surfers, Scott has always had surfing and family in his life.
Chummer says, "We'd go to Hawaii and just all over riding waves and surf. And that's a pleasure to have a family experience like that you know, with your kids."
Now full-time Orthodontists they still go on exotic surf trips. But it's family togetherness and the love of the ocean that led this father and son team to be recognized by the sport that's given them so much.
Scott says, "It's kinda like the icing on the cake.. I already had a great time, it was a great experience. But then you get recognized for it...and you get to join your father, I mean….what more can you ask for than that."
Chummer adds, "My dad taught me a whole lot of things and I just tried to transfer what my dad taught me to Scott because the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree when it gets ripe."
